Implants are essentially a titanium post that is placed in the bone to replace the root of a tooth that you had to lose. It's a great alternative if you're missing a tooth, to replace that tooth in the most conservative way. The implant anchors a new tooth into the bone, looks and chews and functions much like a natural tooth.
Who is a good candidate for implants?
Some people ask who's a good candidate for implants, and that's really anybody who has adequate remaining bone that wants the best option with the longest duration of time. As long as you don't have any contraindications for medical reasons or what have you, which are very few people, most people would qualify as a good candidate for dental implants.
What is the difference between a mini and a full implant?
What's the difference between a mini implant and a traditional normal implant? Mini implants are much smaller, thus the name mini. They are usually placed as a transitional type implant. If somebody is going to be having all their teeth replaced with a denture, for example, they want to have implants to support that denture. Sometimes while the implants are healing, the doctor might place mini implants to support the denture during that time period. Mixed reviews on mini implants, and that's why they've typically gone to more of a temporary type solution. Because of the small size and the amount of force that's placed on them, they typically have a higher failure rate. In our office, we use them more as a temporary solution rather than a long-term solution.
What is the process of having an implant from the beginning to placing one?
Okay. So the process of having an implant done from start to finish, obviously the bad tooth that can't be saved needs to be removed. Either at that time or at a future date, the implant is placed in the bone. That is usually allowed to heal for a few months, usually two or three months, before we attach a tooth to go on there permanently. If you include the extractions, there are really three steps. Take the tooth out, place the implant, and then attach a tooth to that implant.
How long do dental implants last?
Dental implants can actually last your entire lifetime. We quote studies in dentistry when we're talking about how long things last. The most recent large studies show that implants last 95% to 96% of the time, at least 10 years. It's hard to track implants longer than a large group of people for longer than 10 years. But chances are, if you can keep your implant for 10 years, 98% of people do, you'll keep that implant your whole life. The process for getting a dental implant typically takes seven to eight months. First, the tooth is extracted and we usually grow bone in the hole where the tooth was. After a few months, we put the implant in the bone. In another three months or so, you have a tooth.
